In the pre-history of Fluxus, pride of place always has been given to John Cage. Cage was a profound source-both aesthetically and personally-for many of those involved with Fluxus. The locus of his influence was a class held at The New School for Social Research from the fall of 1956 through the summer of 1960. First listed as “Composition” and then beginning in the summer of 1958, as “Experimental Composition,” the class is best known for having included individuals such as Allan Kaprow, George Brecht, and Jackson Mac Low, who would be critical to the geneses of Happenings and Fluxus.
