Initiated by Dr. Hazel Clark in conjunction with the MA Fashion Studies Program within the College of Art + Design History + Theory, Fashion + Politics: Fashion Praxis is a lecture and symposium that celebrates the interdisciplinary work produced at The New School, and provides the unique opportunity to connect scholars, artists, students, and faculty across disciplines and the world. The symposium is also supported by The New School student group, the Dress Practice Collective, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics.

To kick off the event, Susan B. Kaiser, Professor of Women and Gender Studies, Textiles and Clothing, and the Cultural Studies Graduate Group, University of California, Davis, gives an introductory public lecture on the evening of Thursday, February 27 entitled “Fashion Conditions: Praxis through Place.” Following the lecture, a cocktail reception in the adjacent Lang cafeteria celebrates the symposium and the release of the second issue of BIAS: Journal of Dress Practice, a publication produced by the student-run Dress Practice Collective.

The following day, Friday, February 28, current graduate students introduce and initiate conversation between participating faculty members across disciplines within The New School. The pairs will engage in 15-minute conversations in front of an audience of students and faculty, using Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition (1958), Chapter 1 in particular, as a point of departure. With Arendt’s text as a conceptual framework, the faculty present research, discuss their work, and think through the potential of what “fashion praxis” and “praxis” more generally might mean across disciplines, fields, practices, and realities. Q&A follows each conversation.

This symposium continues the conversation initiated by the Dressing in a Dangerous World symposium in the spring of 2012, and is part of a wider exploration of the relationship between fashion and politics at The New School.
