Talk

Rineke Dijkstra

Apr 13, 2004

6:00–8:00pm ET

The New School, Tishman Auditorium

Rineke Dijkstra began her career as a commercial photographer. Her Beach Portraits series gained wide acclaim in the early 90s as memorizing documents of the awkwardness of youth. A sense of vulnerability and isolation is constantly present in her work, whether she is capturing Israeli soldiers, new mothers, or Portuguese Matadors. Rineke’s compassion and empathy for both viewer and subject permeates all her projects. She presents a slide show of past projects, and concludes the talk with her video project, The Buzz Club, in which she asks club goers of diverse genders to mimic the moves and lyrics from their chosen leisure spaces.

Tuesday Night Talks is an ongoing series of presentations and discussions by some of today’s most influential artists, critics, and curators, produced by The Public Art Fund.
