The Vera List New School Art Collection Writing Awards are bestowed annually to students at The New School for the best essays inspired by works in the university's art collection. There are two $400 first place awards and two $200 second place awards. Winning entries will be featured in a celebratory and public presentation. They will be edited by a professional editor, and published in the following year's edition of the award poster as well as online.

The awards were established in 1996 by the late Vera G. List, a life trustee of The New School. The competition is open to students across academic disciplines and in all New School divisions, and encourages submissions in a variety of media. In addition to prose and poetic responses, the judges will consider submissions that re-visit the notion of the "essay," and do so through non-text based media such as film, photography, visuals, music and sound, architecture, or the Web.
