Jafar Siddiq Hamzah, student and human rights advocate, worked to bring peace, justice, and democracy to Aceh, Indonesia. Tragically, he became a victim to the violence he sought to ameliorate. On August 5, 2000, he disappeared from the North Sumatra City of Medan. A month later, Hamzah's body and four other unidentified persons were found. Although many observers suspect the involvement of the Indonesian military, no evidence has yet indicated those responsible for the murder. Jafar was a graduate student at the Graduate Faculty, and the program honors his work and continues advocacy for human rights and justice.

This event was sponsored by The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, The Department of Political Science at the New School University Graduate Facility, and the International Forum for Aceh.
