For some, opera is the irresistible art form, one given to feelings of ecstasy, radiance, exuberance. Is opera a form of poetry set to music? A link to our most primitive emotions? A profound encounter with human emotion? As one critic has written: "Whenever I am asked what is it about opera that keeps me going to it as avidly as others go to Knicks games, I reply that nothing can match it for transfiguration." To honor opera's role in our culture, we have invited the great star of the Metropolitan Opera, Shirley Verrett, to speak about these transformative experiences. Sponsored by The Selma Yontov Schwartz Endowment Fund through the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.
